My Journey as a Photographer
“Is my cancer black or white, pink or blue or does it lie somewhere in the grey scale of my mind. Sometimes it’s the whole spectrum of the rainbow – it gives me so much vitality and zest to live and make a difference. At other times it burdens my mind with dark thoughts. Need I be labeled and deemed a survivor, I think I am a fighter!
I am in awe of this strange malady, a noteworthy adversary, that threatens my peace and my body.
I am also grateful to this cancer. It has provided me a platform for inner growth that I have hungered for long. Was it an answer to my prayers? It has transformed me and what it has taken away was best gone. I am a blue deeper than indigo and sometimes I am a Rococo with a spot of gothic red in it and a bit of Buddhist temple…
F. Spencer Chapman, D.S.O., Memoirs of a Mountaineer
Embark on a visual odyssey through the awe-inspiring Himalayan landscapes captured by the intrepid explorer in her photographic exhibition, "...therefore I climb." Among her remarkable journeys, a trilogy of unforgettable treks stands out - a daring series undertaken in September 2003 within the challenging high-altitude expanses of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve in Uttarakhand. Commissioned by Outlook Traveller Getaways’ Trekking Holidays in India, these back-to-back expeditions unfolded over a month, leading her to the pristine Kagbhushandi lake, the Dronagiri and Bagni glaciers, and the enchanting Nanda Devi National Park.
Navigating offbeat and rugged paths, often devoid of trails, she faced formidable challenges, battling severe cold and adverse weather conditions. Yet, against this backdrop of hardship, the sheer beauty, vastness, and untamed wilderness of the terrain rendered each trial worthwhile and etched indelible memories."...therefore I climb" encapsulates a decade's worth of her Himalayan adventures, featuring captivating images from high-altitude treks such as Kagbhushandi lake, Nanda Devi National Park, and Kuari Pass in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve of Garhwal. The exhibition also showcases explorations like the Dodital trek near Uttarkashi, the historic 114-km Milam Glacier trek in Kumaon tracing the ancient trade route to Tibet, and visits to Rudranath and Bansi Narayan in Chamoli district, Garhwal, along with glimpses of Ladakh, among others.
While these exhibits offer only a glimpse into the incredible moments she has encountered amid the lofty vales of the Himalayas, the photographs, as the saying goes, speak volumes. Through this exhibition, she endeavors to convey her myriad reasons for scaling mountains, aiming to inspire viewers to embark on their own journey of discovery through the majestic peaks of India.
