Keepers of the Gate

Preserving a fading legacy

Delve into the poignant narrative of Lehdo village, where the guardians of a fading tradition stand as the last bastions to one of the most enriching petroglyph sites of Ladakh. In this remote enclave, a family of two dedicated silversmiths persists as the final torchbearers of a craft that may sadly elude the grasp of the succeeding generation. The echoes of their artistry resound through the hills, a steadfast tradition in the face of an uncertain future. As the children of this resilient duo have dispersed in pursuit of work and education, the ancestral home stands in solitude, visited only during fleeting holiday reunions. Lehdo, much like other enclaves nestled in the rugged embrace of the mountains, faces the imminent threat of losing not just its homes but an entire way of life. The looming departure of the elderly generation casts a shadow over the continuity of these traditions, and the heartbeat of Lehdo village echoes with the fading pulse of a cultural heritage at risk of being forgotten.
